 Fowl pox in Chicken and Turkeys


Fowl pox is a viral infection of Poxviridie family,


Etiology


  • Large DNA virus
  • It is resistant to environment.
  • It contains photolyase and A-type inclusion body proteins that protect it from harsh surrounding.


Transformation

1.Direct contact

2. Abrasions of skin.

3.Virus in aerosol form.

4. Mosquitoes and other Mechanical vectors.





Clinical Findings


  • In cutaneous form nodular lesions on various unfeathered skin like on head and upper neck .
  • Lesions are raised enlarged and becomes yellowish and then thick dark scar.
  • Nasal discharge.
  • Also lesions on eyelids that cause closure of eyes .
  • These lesions also proliferate to mouth , esophagus , pharynx, larynx and trachea,
  • Mouth lesions interfere with feeding and respiratory tract lesions cause difficulty in respiration.


Diagnosis


  1. Microscopic examination of affected tissues stained with H and E shows eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies .
  2. Negative Staining electron microscope
  3. Fluorescent antibody and immuno-histo-chemical methods .


Prevention and treatment


  • When disease is out then they should be vaccinated with a live embryo or cell culture propagated virus vaccine.
  • Antibiotics for secondary infection.
  • Steroids for inflammation
  • Immunity Booster medicines.
