Poisoning Therapy
Poisoning occurs when a toxic substance is swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed after coming in contact with the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes. Poisoning is also called toxicosis or intoxication.
Causes:
- Herbicides
- Insecticides
- Toxic Chemicals
- Rat Poison
- Medicines
- Clinical Signs
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Diarrhea
- Heart problems
- Lethargy
- Breathing problems
- Drooling
- Tremors
- Abdominal pain
- Agitation
- Increased thirst
- Bleeding or bruising
- Decreased appetite
- Weakness
- Convulsions
- High fever
- Lack of coordination
- Oral irritation
- Pale gums
- Vomiting blood
- Collapse
- Kidney failure
Treatment
- Control body temperature
- Maintain respiratory and cardiovascular function
- Control Acid-Base balance
- Prevent absorption
Medication
- Dermal decontamination: Bath with liquid dishwashing detergent
- Ocular decontamination: Rinse eyes with eye wash or tab water for 10-15 minutes.
- Respiratory decontamination: Give proper Oxygen ,Humidified oxygen therapy.
- Gastrointestinal decontamination: Give Emetics and induce vomiting.
- Hydrogen peroxide ( 1-2 ml/kg P/O
- Dexamethasone
- Xylazine in cats ( 0.44_1mg/kg IM
- Hydromorphone in cats ( 0.1mg/kg S/C) emesis occurs within 5-15 minutes.
- Activated charcoal ( 1-5g / kg ) single dose can be used but also multiple doses can be given.
- Gastric Lavage : It is performed in first 1-2 hours . Stomach tube can be used for this purpose with warm water.
